Today is sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches plus a grackle.

I put out water for the birds.

After a winter with so many cold spells, i doubted the return of many zone 8 plants and a  zone 9 plant. But to my delight

  • not only the dahlias i grew from seed years ago but the new dahlias from last year have all returned
  • the Calla lilies i did not get around to digging up are sprouting
  • a Jewels of Opar plant (Talinum paniculatum) that came up last year presumably from a scattered seed has returned
  • and a  Stevia plant i'd grown from seed  -- the zone 9 plant -- has come back for the second time under both cold and weed pressure!

Most of the bee balm (Mondara) i looked at yesterday had powdery mildew. I'll look again this weekend to see if there's any i can harvest as a herb while cutting back all the tall growing plants to promote branching.

Wednesday was the monoclonal antibody second infusion. I was feeling good and then the dose of intravenous benadryl hit and i was knocked out of it for the rest of the day. The infusion itself was short.  Dad has COVID aka, as he calls it, Covig, on returning from a Danube cruise with his sweetheart. Nurse said to stay away from him (and my sister and her husband who have been exposed to Dad as they cared for him) for two weeks.

Thursday was a blur with work meetings. I was promising myself a Friday to focus but then more distractions. Plus a new phone has arrived, so ensuring i have all the things i use set up is taking attention.

Meanwhile Edward Cat has been sleeping, not interested in usual companionship, not eating. He's clearly got a cold. We first thought to let it take its course, but Thursday and Friday Christine's taken him to the vet. (The vet urged the appointment on Friday). Blood sugar low, so stopping the insulin, and ordered a glucose testing kit so we can do a better job monitoring without vet trips. We have an appetite stimulant to try.

He wasn't in the bed when i woke somewhat early, so i looked for him and finally found him by the litter box. I assume getting there sapped all his energy.

Christine's sister's two cats died in the past year and i know Christine is almost expecting Edward to die, following Luigi. She's worried about his will to live.  I hope not. He still looks like a hearty cat.

Misty morning neighborhood

Light mist, enough to justify a jacket but not enough to get me wet. Met up with Ms. Sasha, did our ritual of a greeting on the neighbor's walk and then stroll around the corner to her own front steps for further workout. Lilacs are starting to bloom, no aroma yet. Catbird twerdling from the top of our crab-apple when I got back, but I had just heard a full professional oratorio from a mocker so the catbird did not impress. But then, I'm not his audience.

Air temperature 54 F, wind southeast about 6 mph, cloudy with roads and lawns damp from overnight rain. City mower out at 5:30 in the park, throwing out clouds of mist along with the grass clippings. Catbird was up before that, singing from the azalea. Having his own Eurovision contest with his mirror image?

Philosophical Questions: Distance

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

As people, we feel our moral obligation weaken with physical as well as emotional distance from individuals in need. For example, you’re more likely to help someone dying of hunger at your feet than someone dying of hunger in another country. How does this human trait of morality dependent on distance shape our world?

:: With the unexpected guests gone, Backstep poses another question. This one makes Grandmama and Arthur Darius take very close notice. Part of the Sidestep Travelers universe. ::

The knock, when it came, interrupted a long, convoluted story made up one sentence at a time by all three of the older children. Everest slept deeply, his body sodden with comfort. Beneath him, Derek cupped a hand over the toddler’s only visible ear, then called, “We’re stuck!”

Hurrying footsteps brought Grandmama in the lead, Arthur Darius right behind her, and their father laden with a tray full of sandwiches and drinks.

Today we went to Arthur's Strawberry Jam Spring Festival. It's not very big this year, only a couple of blocks, but that's okay because the weather was hot and steamy, and with a small event we actually did get to see it all.

Today is hot and steamy, not quite as bad as yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus the phlegmatic young fox squirrel.

I put out water for the birds.

I put out the flats of pots.

EDIT 5/16/25 -- We went to the Strawberry Festival.  On the way home, we stopped at Backyard Garden greenhouse and I picked up a flat of plants.

EDIT 5/16/25 -- I watered the flats of pots.

EDIT 5/16/25 -- I was going to plant some African marigolds, but the wind started howling and I could see rain in the distance, so I brought everything back indoors.  Eh, at least the downdrafts made everything cooler.

I found a squirrel tail and a few tufts of fur, so I expect that the careless young fox squirrel became somebody's lunch.

EDIT 5/16/25 -- And now it's raining. \o/

EDIT 5/16/25 -- It rained off and on, then stopped.

I did a bit of work around the patio.

I collected some microfauna and installed them in the cookie jar terrarium.

I planted 12 assorted yellow and orange African marigolds around the telephone pole garden.  Some of the seeds there are sprouting too.  :D

I've seen a male cardinal and a young fox squirrel.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Tiny speedwell and chickweed blooming in lawns that haven't been sprayed with weedkiller. Plain grass lawns are so boring. And that fool catbird continues trying to scare off the bird in the window. He doesn't actually hit the window, just flares at it, and he can't pick up much speed because he perches about 2' away from the glass.

It can't happen here

Air temperature 57 F, wind south at 8 mph, fog. Nearest rain on the weather radar is up at the rooftop of Maine and moving away. Back yard crab-apple blooms are opening, attracting warblers and finches for the bugs. Should be able to get a walk in. Continue spreading chaos.

Folks have mentioned an interest in questions and conversations that make them think. So I've decided to offer more of those. This batch features hobbies.

Jewelry making is a hobby of creating adornments such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces, or rings. It includes such methods as beading, metalwork, glasswork, and even string. It can be affordable or expensive. People of all ages enjoy this hobby, and it's one that many kids get into with friendship bracelets and such.

On Dreamwidth, consider creative communities like [community profile] crafty, [community profile] get_knitted, [community profile] justcreate, or [community profile] nacramamo.

Wait, We’re What?

[Landing #7, day 1]

:: The conversation in the basement begins with Backstep’s most pressing question: How is there a basement? Part of the Sidestep Travelers universe. ::

Backstep trod carefully down the wooden steps to the third riser, then pulled the door shut behind herself. Parker had been insistent about that, but hadn’t explained. Task done, she jogged down to the pretty parquetry diamonds that met the base of the stairs and framed the safe area outside of the ritual circle engraved in the center of the room.

Everest tumbled out of the beanbag chair that he’d been sprawled in, then scrambled to Backstep. “More cookies?” he asked hopefully.

“No,” Backstep told him gently, shaking her head. “I just took the dirty dishes upstairs.” She frowned at Parker. “If you wanted to know what they’re talking about, you could’ve gone up.”

While pushing ‘America First,’ Trump set to accept Qatar’s luxury jet as Air Force One

The Qatari plane and its whiff of excess would also seem at odds with Trump’s message that Americans may have to make do with less as he remakes the global economic order.

Well, if anybody knows whoring, it Qatar.  This situation just begs for a bra-drop cartoon.  Or maybe a stripper pole.

Meanwhile, azalea . . .

We have a catbird arguing with his reflection in the window that looks into the heart of that bush. Catbirds nested there last year, with success. Maybe nostalgia?
