Done Since 2025-05-11

So, not a bad week. (Can I accurately call it a "pretty good" week? I'm never able to make judgements like that.) But I did some guitar practice, and got out for a walk four times, and sang a little with m, who came back from the US last Sunday (bringing mail that had accumulated at our US address). N came back from New York yesterday; she gave me a little "engraving and drill pen" as an unbirthday present -- it had arrived while she was gone. j came over as well, so we had all of my Dutch family here. G made baked salmon.

Apparently I totally forgot about posting Thankful Thursday this week. Well, Thursday was pretty eventful, with a urology appointment (I can expect to hear back a week from Wednesday about what my ongoing treatment will be), some singing practice with m, and actually performing the songs we'd practiced at Eurofilk. (Is "at" the right word for attending an event by zoom?)

... and forgot to mention Mother's Day in last week's post, though that's not terribly surprising, since I have no-one to call anymore.

Yesterday I finally stopped waffling and (finally!) pre-ordered a Framework 12" Laptop. I've been eyeing it for some time, and coveting a Framework for years. I increased the specs over what I'd initially configured, but because I'd waffled over it I won't get it until Q3 sometime. Bah! I'll post a lot more once it finally ships.

Also, yesterday was the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia; there's that. Some more trans-related links under Saturday. And today is the 45th anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. (Which of course sent me down a rabbit-hole involving magma, hollow-Earth fiction, and so on.)

As for links, here from yesterdat is a list of The world's five happiest cities for 2025. Look for your hometown in the Institute for Quality of Life's Happy City Index 2025. Den Haag ranks #65, and Seattle is #80.

Edward Cat

Following up on last night's semi-cryptic post.

Last night, around 1 am, Edward Cat's blood work came back indicative of congestive heart failure with nothing in the fluid from around the lungs (pulmonary edema? i guess) indicative of cancer. There was some chance his breathing difficulties were triggered by fluids he received on Thursday[1]. Given that, there are reasonable chances that he can receive treatment and be better, at least for a while. So he's been hospitalized today with some hope that they can stabilize his breathing, give him some drugs for the fluid build up and to help him eat, and feed him (with a feeding tube) to get his eating started again -- and then he might come home. And it's possible maybe we give him regular meds  and he's OK for a while.

We got home, had a bit of alcohol to sedate and counter coffee, and then were asleep -- my watch says 3:20 am. I was up around 7. I just called and learned they're doing rounds: we'll hear how he is in a few hours.

"What can't be cured must be endured"

There's a local cat, scruffy gray tabby with white paws, probably feral. Not at all friendly. Yesterday I saw it limping across the intersection, moving slow and with a front paw problem. Not a damned thing I can do to help it. Animal control officer is already working on neighborhood ferals, so this one is probably trap-shy. And we have a range of wild predators -- coyotes, foxes, bobcats, fishers, martens, even the eagles and large owls.

Keep your kitties inside, folks.

One in a series

Air temperature 52 F, wind near calm, cloudy. Roads wet from overnight rain, which seems to be moving on. May have a gap big enough to fit in a walk.

Edward

So his breathing was worrisome, Christine sent a video to our vet who suggested we take him to the 24 hr vet. We are now in Durham where we have been told he has fluid buildup around his lungs, either from congestive heart failure or cancer. We will have them attempt to remove the fluid to provide relief and be tested for signals of cancer. Also a blood test to determine heat failure.

Then I think we will take him home. There is an at home euthanasia vet to call when the time comes. There's still a chance it's just infection but the vet didn't seem to think that the likely result.

Anita tiptoed into the kitchen, one hand rubbing at the base of her neck. She paused as she reached for the light switch, focusing on the teenager curled on the floor, cradling a steaming mug in both hands. “The chairs don’t bite,” Anita whispered, and tried on an awkward smile. “Can’t sleep?”

“I have nightmares, sometimes,” Backstep admitted. “If you need a light, go ahead. I don’t think I’ll be getting any more sleep tonight.”

“I haven’t gotten to sleep yet,” Anita admitted, still whispering. She flicked on the light with a wince.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches plus a grackle.

I put out water for the birds.

(morning writing, health, garden, cats, f&f)

After a winter with so many cold spells, i doubted the return of many zone 8 plants and a  zone 9 plant. But to my delight

  • not only the dahlias i grew from seed years ago but the new dahlias from last year have all returned
  • the Calla lilies i did not get around to digging up are sprouting
  • a Jewels of Opar plant (Talinum paniculatum) that came up last year presumably from a scattered seed has returned
  • and a  Stevia plant i'd grown from seed  -- the zone 9 plant -- has come back for the second time under both cold and weed pressure!

Most of the bee balm (Mondara) i looked at yesterday had powdery mildew. I'll look again this weekend to see if there's any i can harvest as a herb while cutting back all the tall growing plants to promote branching.

Wednesday was the monoclonal antibody second infusion. I was feeling good and then the dose of intravenous benadryl hit and i was knocked out of it for the rest of the day. The infusion itself was short.  Dad has COVID aka, as he calls it, Covig, on returning from a Danube cruise with his sweetheart. Nurse said to stay away from him (and my sister and her husband who have been exposed to Dad as they cared for him) for two weeks.

Thursday was a blur with work meetings. I was promising myself a Friday to focus but then more distractions. Plus a new phone has arrived, so ensuring i have all the things i use set up is taking attention.

Meanwhile Edward Cat has been sleeping, not interested in usual companionship, not eating. He's clearly got a cold. We first thought to let it take its course, but Thursday and Friday Christine's taken him to the vet. (The vet urged the appointment on Friday). Blood sugar low, so stopping the insulin, and ordered a glucose testing kit so we can do a better job monitoring without vet trips. We have an appetite stimulant to try.

He wasn't in the bed when i woke somewhat early, so i looked for him and finally found him by the litter box. I assume getting there sapped all his energy.

Christine's sister's two cats died in the past year and i know Christine is almost expecting Edward to die, following Luigi. She's worried about his will to live.  I hope not. He still looks like a hearty cat.

Misty morning neighborhood

Light mist, enough to justify a jacket but not enough to get me wet. Met up with Ms. Sasha, did our ritual of a greeting on the neighbor's walk and then stroll around the corner to her own front steps for further workout. Lilacs are starting to bloom, no aroma yet. Catbird twerdling from the top of our crab-apple when I got back, but I had just heard a full professional oratorio from a mocker so the catbird did not impress. But then, I'm not his audience.

The early worm gets mowed

Air temperature 54 F, wind southeast about 6 mph, cloudy with roads and lawns damp from overnight rain. City mower out at 5:30 in the park, throwing out clouds of mist along with the grass clippings. Catbird was up before that, singing from the azalea. Having his own Eurovision contest with his mirror image?

Philosophical Questions: Distance

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

As people, we feel our moral obligation weaken with physical as well as emotional distance from individuals in need. For example, you’re more likely to help someone dying of hunger at your feet than someone dying of hunger in another country. How does this human trait of morality dependent on distance shape our world?

:: With the unexpected guests gone, Backstep poses another question. This one makes Grandmama and Arthur Darius take very close notice. Part of the Sidestep Travelers universe. ::

The knock, when it came, interrupted a long, convoluted story made up one sentence at a time by all three of the older children. Everest slept deeply, his body sodden with comfort. Beneath him, Derek cupped a hand over the toddler’s only visible ear, then called, “We’re stuck!”

Hurrying footsteps brought Grandmama in the lead, Arthur Darius right behind her, and their father laden with a tray full of sandwiches and drinks.

Today we went to Arthur's Strawberry Jam Spring Festival. It's not very big this year, only a couple of blocks, but that's okay because the weather was hot and steamy, and with a small event we actually did get to see it all.
